Paperback. Etat : Gut. XXXVI., 92 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - rubbed and scuffed otherwise perfect condition - This volume aims to offer for use of sixth-formers and undergraduates a representative annotated range of passages from the Silver Latin epic poets - Lucan, Valerius Flaccus, Silius Italicus and Statius. This is a body of poetry that tends to be familiar only to specialists, which is a pity, for it has its merits. -- The literature of the period between the death of Augustus (A.D. 14) and the ascent to the throne of Hadrian (A.D. 117), the 'Silver Age', is overshadowed by a great past already recognised as classical. The proscription of Silver Latin took place during the nineteenth century when the canon of Greek and Latin authors underwent critical assessment; the indiscriminate reading of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was at an end. But the application of the adjective 'Silver' - as opposed to 'Golden' for the high literary achievements of the first century B.C. - has a disparaging effect which is not at all deserved, as readers of Tacitus and Juvenal will testify. -- The Ascendancy of Rhetoric The Silver Epic Poets -- General Characteristics of Silver Latinity -- General Characteristics of Silver Epic -- A Note on Metre -- Lucan -- Valerius Flaccus -- Silius Italicus -- Statius -- Lucan -- Valerius Flaccus -- Silius Italicus Statius.
