An excellent bibliography giving full bibliographic descriptions for Borrow's works published in his lifetime while including much else of interest and being eminently readable: the authors state: "our aim has been to provide an account of Borrow's entire writing and publishing career. We accordingly devote more attention than is usual to the genesis and evolution of Borrow's publications. Our constant concern has been to show how his works came to be written, how they found their way into print and by what stages they achieved the form in which we know them." Coverage includes the books; translations by Borrow; anonymous publications; letters; pamphlets printed for T. J. Wise; privately printed pamphlets; John Murray's editions; collected editions; and contributions to periodicals. Other sections identify previously unpublished materials in books and periodicals (to 1981), nineteenth-century translations of Borrow's works, and other posthumous publications of Borrow's works as well as about fifty bibliographies and bibliographical studies related to Borrow. Entries give title-page transcriptions, physical descriptions, and extensive notes on composition and publication histories. Manuscript sources are discussed throughout.
