From the days of the silent movies to the start of World War Two, Yiddish film was a major form of entertainment for millions of Jews in Europe and America. The modern audience may only remember the Yiddish-speaking Indians in Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles, but the influence of Yiddish film can be traced in the work of cult director Edgar G. Ulmer as well as contemporary directors such as Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet. Yiddish film was much more than just film in the Yiddish langauge, it was a medium in which tradition clashed with modernity, notably in the films where Mollie Picon was the actor and Joseph Green the director. In the West, Yiddish film was at the same time the medium through which the immigrant generation could recall their East European life and the bridge to life beyond the shtetl. This is the first ever Reader in Yiddish film and the only book on Yiddish film published in the UK. The authors, however, are from many countries and traditions.
Sylvia Paskin is a writer and lecturer on film. She has co-edited three collections of poetry, including (for Five Leaves) The Dybbuk of Delight, an anthology of Jewish women's poetry and, again for Five Leaves, The Slow Mirror and Other Stories: new fiction by Jewish writers.

paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
