Welsh Verse, a classic anthology of Welsh poetry in a milestone translation by Tony Conran, makes a welcome return. TThe tradition of Welsh poetry stretches back to the sixth century, making it one of the oldest living literatures in Europe. In Welsh Verse Tony Conran translates a selection from fourteen centuries of poetry, from the epics of Taliesin and Aneurin to modern poets such as Gwyn Thomas and Nesta Wyn Jones. En route he takes in sagas and carols, hymn and strict metres, Romantics and Social Realists.
The poets translated include Aneirin, Taliesin, Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Iolo Goch, Lewis Gkyn Cothi, Morgan Llwyd, William Williams Pantycelyn, Ann Griffith, John Ceiriog Hughes, Robert Williams Parry, T.H. Parry-Williams, Saunders Lewis, Gwenallt, Waldo Willams, Bobi Jones and Gwyn Thomas. There is even a selection of thirty englynion over five centuries.
The poetic movements of Welsh-language verse are charted in Conran s influential Introduction, in which he outlines the importance of poetry in Welsh society and how it has responded to Welsh history.
Biographie de l'auteur
Tony Conran (1931-2013) was a poet, translator, playwright and academic at Bangor. He devoted his life to the two literatures of Wales, both commentating on them and making his own contribution through his work in English.
