The novella focuses on Weekly (real name Marguerite Morris), an old charwoman whose nickname, "The Newspaper," stems from her role in circulating neighbourhood gossip as she works in various middle-class homes on Claremont Street. She relays details about weddings, accidents, and daily happenings, keeping residents informed without them realizing how much she sees and knows. Despite her intimate knowledge of others, Weekly maintains her privacy and discretion, never revealing matters that are truly personal or significant to herself. Weekly's life is marked by loneliness, physical hardship, and frugality. She has lived a life of service since her youth and harbour's a deep desire to escape the social constraints and demands imposed by her employers, her past, and her memories, particularly concerning a troubled relationship with her brother.
