Comparing Korean and Japanese Buddhist art, this volume explores the cultural, ideological and artistic exchange between the two countries during the 6th-9th centuries, when Buddhism took hold throughout northeast Asia. Buddhist sculptures in gilt bronze, wood and stone are the main focus of this work, which contains essays by Korean, Japanese and American scholars.

Washizuka Hiromitsu, Director of the Nara National Museum in Japan, and Kang Woo-bang, Professor at Ewha Woman's University and former director of the Gyeongju National Museum in Korea, are co-curators of the accompanying exhibition. Tanabe Saburosuke is Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Kim Lena is Professor of Korean and Buddhist Art History at Hong'ik University in Seoul.
