Kossuth was a key figure in the Hungarian struggle for independence from Austrian rule, and his visit to America was intended to garner support for Hungary's cause. Kossuth's arrival in the United States was met with great enthusiasm as he toured various cities and spoke on behalf of Hungarian independence. His speeches drew large crowds, and he received a warm reception from American citizens and political figures alike. However, while Kossuth managed to stir the public's sympathy, his efforts to secure significant political or military backing from the U.S. government fell short. John H. Komlos delves into the nuances of Kossuth's interactions with the American public, his meetings with political leaders, and the broader implications of his tour for both Hungary and the United States. Through comprehensive research and the use of primary sources, the book provides a rich narrative of this diplomatic mission, its successes, and its limitations. It also reflects on the international political landscape of the time and the intersection of European revolutions with American foreign policy. This work is an important resource for those interested in Hungarian history, 19th-century international diplomacy, and the transatlantic influence of political movements.
