Early Life & Education- Whitaker was born in 1900 in Kansas and raised in Missouri, later earning degrees in mechanical engineering (MIT), electrical engineering (Carnegie Tech), and law (Cleveland Law School). Founding of AMP (Aircraft Marine Products) - At age 41, he founded AMP in Harrisburg, PA, which grew into the world's largest manufacturer of electrical connectors, powering advances in aviation, computing, telecommunications, and industrial electronics. Engineering Innovation-Whitaker pioneered miniature electrical components and solderless connectors, enabling safer, faster, and more reliable wiring in aircraft and later in commercial electronics. Leadership & Growth- His blend of engineering expertise and legal training helped him navigate patents, scale manufacturing, and build AMP into a global enterprise employing tens of thousands. Philanthropy & Legacy- Upon his death in 1975, Whitaker's estate funded the Whitaker Foundation, which distributed over $120 million to advance biomedical engineering research and education across major universities. Institutions Named in His Honor-His legacy includes major facilities such as the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute (Johns Hopkins), Whitaker Hall (Washington University), and the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering (FGCU). Impact on Modern Technology- Whitaker's work helped standardize electrical connectivity, forming the backbone of countless technologies, from early computers to modern medical devices.
