The Flora of Samoa is a comprehensive account of all of the flowering plants found in the Samoan archipelago written by botanist W. Arthur Whistler with support from the National Tropical Botanical Garden. This 940-page book is richly illustrated with 159 color figures including over 900 Samoan flowering plants. It includes introductory chapters covering the geography, climate, vegetation, and the botanical history of Samoa. Taxonomic treatments of the flowering plants include identification keys to the genera and species, currently accepted botanical names, synonyms, diagnostic descriptions of each species, with notes on their distribution, Samoan and English names, and uses. Also included are literature cited, a glossary of botanical terms, an index to scientific names and appendix listing the 11 new species described in this flora and seven potentially new species. With 543 native (177 of which are endemic) and 290 naturalized flowering plant species and 225 ferns and fern allies, Samoa has the second largest native vascular flora in Polynesia after the Hawaiian Islands. About 33% percent of Samoa’s native plants are found nowhere else. Publication of the Flora of Samoa is timely, as much of the remaining native vegetation is being rapidly lost to invasive plants and animals, land degradation, and threats from climate change. This work will greatly aid biologists, conservationists, vegetation ecologists, and resource managers in the study and preservation of rare or threatened endemic Samoan species and habitats. This book represents a milestone in the study of Pacific Island floras as well as the embodiment of the author’s life-long love for the people and plants of the Samoan Islands. 978-0-915809-04-2 Published by the National Tropical Botanical Garden 2022
