By Samuel A. Streit and Daniel H. Traister (Athenaeum of Philadelphia) Illustrated paperback. Catalog of the Sept. 7-Nov. 7, 2012 exhibition. With contents that date mainly from the end of the fifteenth through the middle of the twentieth century, the Turner gift appears to be all that survives intact of what was once a larger and multi-generational family collection. Built primarily by University of Maine at Orono Professor of English and Comparative Literature Albert Morton Turner, most of the books are literary. Albert's father, Oscar Albert Bierstadt, a librarian, worked at the Astor Library in New York and later at the Boston Public Library. He acquired the books that began the collection, some from the library of his brother Edward, which was sold at auction in 1897. For the most part, the Turner Collection is distinguished by its printed books, but a number of early manuscript fragments are also contained in it, as well as some works of art.
