Softcover. Etat : Near fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First edition. A great association copy, inscribed on the title page: "For Jim & Linda Harrison, with love and with appreciation for our friendship and all we have shared. Dan, Nov. 23, 1985." His fourth book of poems. Harrison provides the blurb at the top the jacket's rear: "Snow on the Backs of Animals is singularly fine, the kind of book it would not be impertinent to read sitting on a stump in a forest clearing or beside a river. The poems are full of the kind of attention to animal and human life, and to the natural world, that is generally lost in the sump of ego . [The poems] transmit a lucid sense of wonderment and pure song, finely honed poetry, pure and unadorned." The friendship between Dan Gerber and Jim Harrison is storied. Both went to Michigan State at the same time, though they didn't know each other well then. Gerber read Harrison'sPlainsongin 1966."I went out and sat under a pine tree and spent all afternoon reading that book, and was just completely blown away," he remembers. "Here's a guy who grew up 35 miles from where I grew up, and who was writing the kinds of poems I had been trying to write." Two years later they founded the Sumac literary journal and press together. Peter Matthiessen later turned them both on to Zen. They remained lifelong friends and correspondents. And like Harrison, Gerber's most recent books have been published by Copper Canyon. A very near fine book in white wraps with a just a touch of scuffing to the lower text block face; in a fine jacket. N° de réf. du vendeur 1813
