"Ratz" - Francis Mawson Rattenbury - was only twenty-five years old when he was commissioned to design the new Parliament Buildings for British Columbia, and soon became the most sought-after architect in the province. He designed almost every important building of his time in British Columbia, including the Empress Hotel, Government House, court-houses around the province, and Victoria's Crystal Gardens. Rattenbury's personal life was equally impressive and intriguing, with an ending as juicy as that in any novel! This revised edition includes many previously unknown details and discloses the aftermath of the infamous Rattenbury murder trial, including the fate of Rattenbury's children and George Stoner, the chaffeur convicted of his murder.
The first edition of Rattenbury won the BC Book Award for "an outstanding contribution to the field of literature pertaining to the understanding and enjoyment of British Columbia."
Review: Terry Reksten is one of those rare historians such as Barbara Tuchman and Cecil Woodham-Smith who can skilfully portray the movers and shakers of history as living, breathing human beings. In my view, this is one of the best biographies ever written and a must-read for all Canadians.
