Etat : Good+. RARE- A tight and unmarked copy-" As someone once said of war and generals, historical writing is much too important to be left to professional historians. The contribution of dedicated amateurs in the recording and, therefore, preservation of our nation's past should not be underestimated. THE NATIVE LINK is a good example. The author, in the process of compiling a history of his family, found a number of his relatives were linked to the major developments of their time. His grandfather was the Hon. John Taylor, one of Manitoba's first ministers of agriculture, and his lineage includes such well-known Red River surnames as Bannerman, Inkster, and Omand. Thus the narrative transcends one man's family tree and symbolizes the roots of what we know today as Western Canada. The Great Indian War of the 1750s, explorations by Europeans, life at Hudson's Bay Company trading posts, and the 1870 Riel Rebellion are among the topics presented from a distinctive viewpoint. Readers may be surprised to learn, for instance, who really gave birth to the first white child in the Canadian Prairies. The author, himself of mixed Indian and British blood, stresses the crucial part native women played in the development of Canadian society."- Stain on outer text block. N° de réf. du vendeur 21457
