Synopsis

It is 1964, and there are rumblings of a possible new war in a place called Vietnam. Twenty-year-old, John, is dissatisfied with his boring routine in Central Illinois, so one day, he goes for a drive on Route 66. He doesn’t plan to go very far, but miles and miles later, he realizes, “Some part of my brain, the part that keeps my right foot pressing down on the accelerator, is stuck on go.”

After a series of chance encounters, he ends up in Arizona, where more chance encounters result in him visiting Arizona State University where a note on a bulletin board leads him into a convoluted series of adventures that the author describes as “surprising to me, so I expect it will also be quite surprising to you.”
