Syed Tanvir Wasti, Professor Emeritus, Civil Engineering Department, Middle East Technical University [METU], Ankara, Turkey, was born in Lahore Pakistan. He took his B.S. degree from METU [1961], and his PhD degree at Cambridge University, England [1965]. He has pursued a satisfying career in teaching and research, and is a registered Professional Engineer [California]. He worked at UC Berkeley as Assistant Research Engineer [1969-1971] and Research Engineer [1978-1980] and at the Engineering University [UET], Lahore as Professor [1976-1978]. In 2004 he served as the first Rooney Scholar at Robert Morris University, Pennsylvania. Syed Tanvir Wasti inherits his love of poetry from his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who were all professors of English literature, as well as scholars in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. He complements the achievements of his family by choosing to become proficient in Turkish. So far 20 of his research papers on aspects of late Ottoman history and politics have appeared in the journal Middle Eastern Studies published in London.
