British Press. She was a personality, wasM iss Burton of theE vening Observer. Her cards were printed thus: MISS MARY J. BURTON Evening Observer. She had interviewed Miss Ellen Terry and theB ishop of Madagascar, Mr. Seymour Hicks and the Chief Commissioner of Police. She had been present at the last Marlborough House garden party in the cloak-room, that is to say, where she caught sight of Lady Thingummy shat, Miss What-you-may-call ssunshade, and of various other things modistical or fashionable, all of which were duly described under the heading Royalty and Dress in the early afternoon edition of theE vening Observer. (T he article itself is signed M. J. B., and is to be found in the files of that leading halfpennyworth.) For these reasons and for various others, tooP olly felt irate with the man in the corner, and told him so with her eyes, as plainly as any pair of brown eyes can speak.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

"They meet in a little teashop off the Strand in London's West End. She is young, well-dressed, and is just beginning a promising career as a reporter; he is old, thin, peculiar looking ---- almost scarecrow like wearing a gaudily checked ulster. Yet he fascinates her more than any man she has ever known. No, their meeting is hardly romantic, but it is quite 'Po-etic', owing as it does a great deal to the father of the detective story."----from the Introduction. N° de réf. du vendeur 025394
