XX [From the preface] "A remark made by Lily de Jongh Osborne, doyenne of Guatemalan textiles, sent us on the search that results in this publication. She said that 'Guatemalan Maya textiles were their books and each one wrote his own.' The ability of costume to tell a full and complex story about the wearer was an intriguing idea, and provided a vital stimulus for our research. An interested public has customarily identified Guatemalan Maya costumes, or their separate parts, according to the village where they are worn and/or made, or characterized them according to the textile process. We felt it was time to apply a larger perspective. One of us was particularly interested in unexplored aspects of costume history, while the other was intrigued by costume similarities transcending village borders. One avenue of investigation began with a look backward - at Highland costume before the Spanish conquest, and at colonial records charting some of the changes in costume, particularly men's costume, and the centuries following Alvarado's arrival. It led beyond those records, however, and into the vast realm of Spanish costume. Old books were combed for documentation of clothing in the Spanish countryside in the effort to trace some of the rarer and more interesting elements of men's costume back to their sources. It was the costumes themselves that directed the other part of the work - how they looked, how they were made. Using the museum collection, costumes were grouped and compared according to their stylistic traits such as color used, background treatment, arrangement of supplementary design areas, types and repetition of motifs. Construction techniques were also analyzed and classified, including loom type, number of webs, neckline treatment, length and width, nature of edges and side openings, supplementary fibers, foreign findings, and embroidery. Although all parts of the costume were considered, huipils provided the most useful material for comparative purposes. 202 huipils were analyzed. N° de réf. du vendeur 003364
