Terrence J. O'Rourke : was a graduate of the California School for the Deaf. Berkeley and Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. After an extensive teaching career in residential schools for the deaf in North Dakota and North Carolina and at Gallaudet. Mr. O'Rourke served as director of the National Association of the Deaf Communicative Skills Program for over ten years. In that capacity, he was instrumental in establishing Sign Language programs in schools, colleges and agencies across the country. He is the author of the nations all-lime best selling Sign Language text. A Basic Course in Manual Communication and editor of such publications as Psycholinguistics and Total Communication : The State of the Art. In 1980. he co-authored A Basic Course in American Sign Language with Tom Humphries and Carol Padden. He was twice co-chairman of the National Symposium on Sign Language Research and Teaching. In addition. he served as president of the American Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities and was a member of Executive Committee of the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. TJ, as he was known, was a teacher, lecturer, sports writer, author, publisher, research associate, editor, administrator, stand-up comedian, world traveller, and bon vivant-not necessarily in that order. He passed away January 10. 1992 just prior to the completion of A Free Hand : Enfranchising the Education of Deaf Children which he co-edited.
Frank Allen Paul : was a native Californian. residing in San Diego. Mr. Paul received his art training at California State University. Northridge and at Otis and Chouinards Art Schools. Fluent in sign language. He worked as an interpreter for the deaf and specialized in sign language research illustration. He worked with Dr. Ursula Bellugi, Director of the Laboratory of Language and Cognitive Neuroscience at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. California. He was also known for his publication work with Joyce Media in Los Angeles, for which he designed and directed the first commercially produced sign language animation. Later, he was affiliated with DawnSignPress. Mr. Paul is deceased.
