This book (designed to accompany an exhibition) discusses artistic representations of Lafayette. From page 7: "Born into one of France's wealthiest and most prestigious families, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette (1757-1834) dreamed from a young age of becoming a champion of freedom and a hero of chivalric proportions. He seems to have come into the world with an unwavering altruism and a firm faith in human rights--unusual qualities for someone of his social rank and time. As he grew into young adulthood, his fine character was enhanced by a natural dignity that perfectly suited his plans for greatness. By the time he emerged from puberty, it was obvious that his lofty goals might actually be achievable; by the time he was twenty, Lafayette was one of the most famous Europeans of his day."
