But in 1871 a terrible shootout occurred there between escaped convicts and a posse, leaving several men dead and wounded. That year 29 convicts broke out of prison in Carson City. Six of them fled more than 200 miles south into Inyo County, pledging to kill anyone who got in their way. When they were cornered at Convict Lake, they killed several posse members, then fled to Bishop. There three of them were captured and two were lynched. George Williams III is also the author of Rosa May and Mark Twain and the Jumping Frog of Calaveras County ? a specialist in Western Americana and California/Nevada regional history. On September 17, 1871, 29 prisoners ? including murderers, horse thieves, and train robbers ? escaped from the Nevada State Prison in Carson City, killing one guard and wounding several others. Six convicts fled more than 200 miles south into Mono and Inyo counties, California, pledging to kill any man who got in their way. Cornered at Convict Lake, the convicts killed several posse members, then fled to Bishop, where three were captured ? two were lynched and hanged. The exciting story is based on newspaper accounts of the day, court and prison records, with action scenes illustrated by Dave Comstock and a detailed map helping the reader and traveller follow the escape route today.
