Growing up, my mother shared an oral history of her family’s struggle in Indian Territory. As a gift to Mom, I started my ancestral research with her side. Hours spent glued to a chair looking for that mystical Indian name on the Dawes list were in vain. That name still eludes me. However, relatives I found include both Rebs and Yankees, Irish immigrants, and a famous Kiowa painter. It is my desire to share their stories that prompted me to write. My novel, Unbridled, was named a finalist for best novel from a debut author by Western Writers of America and won the Will Rogers Medallion Award. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Education-Composite Social Sciences from Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota. While there I received the Wenona Cook Scholarship Award presented by Friends of the Leland D. Case Library for Western Historical Studies for academic achievement
“You know Missus Cannon, it’s none of my business—” He stopped abruptly waiting for her to urge him on. “I know where this is going, Mr. Beckett. I apologize for my husband’s bad manners.” “I may be no more than an uneducated yahoo, but this ain’t the Old South. Out here husbands and wives need to be partners. Sometimes it’s hard to let go of the old ways. This land is changing every day; some of it good, some of it bad. You need to change or go back where you came from.” ...in her heart she knew he was right. It wasn’t in her to watch her children do without. She determined she’d find a way.
