Cross Sections, Catherine Wagner's first book since Art and Science: Investigating Matter (1996), features new work completed between 1998 and 2001. With a Visual Artist Fellowship grant from the San Jose Museum of Art, Wagner began making photographic images using MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) technology to create a new body of work that explores both the unique individuality of common objects and their transcendental qualities.

Informative essays describe Wagner's earlier work and her progressive study of the relationship between art and science. Contributions by Glen Helfand, Cornelia Butler, F. David Peat and others.
