This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
The question of gutty v. putty having practically settled itself, as is the manner of such, by the survival of the fittest, I have in this edition substituted for its discussion a few remarks on the merits and demerits of the bulger the latest phase of golf-club evolution. This will, I hope, bring the little book, as far as its humble aims go, to the level of present requirements.
(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Decorative Cloth. Etat : Fine. No Jacket. Reprint Edition. 75 pages, decorative cloth. Foreword by Herbert Warren Wind. 1987 reprint of 1886 edition. A scarce and significant book in the library of golf for two primary reasons. This is the first book written by Horace Hutchinson, a monumental figure in golf both for his playing prowess and his writing ability. He authored more than a dozen golf books, countless golf articles, and dozens of books on a wide variety of subjects. Most importantly, this is the first book of golf instruction offered for public sale, the scant earlier writings on the matter having been printed for private distribution. It is approximately the twentieth book on golf published. The publisher, William Blackwood, was a personal friend of Hutchinson, and it is thought by bibliophiles that the production run was most likely limited to 1000 copies or less. The need and success of this book can be inferred by its long production run of fourteen editions including several revisions over twenty years. In a self-deprecating manner, Hutchinson would later write in his autobiography "The only excuse to be made for it is that it was a very little one." Blue cloth binding with silver lettering on spine and silver lettering and silver illustration on front board. Fine condition. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
