Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Nicosia, Cyprus: Language Management Corporation, 1989. Softcover. True First Edition of this scarce historical novel set in 12th-century BC Cyprus, Phoenicia, and Egypt, centered around the cult of Astarte in Paphos. Original gold-stamped pictorial wrappers. A Near Fine, tight, and clean copy; square binding with minor edge wear and light shelf rubbing to the covers as shown in photos. Interior clean and unmarked. A highly elusive local Cypriot imprint, virtually unobtainable outside the region. From the back flap: "One of the best historical novels of the year. We live out the great events of the ancient world 3500 years ago in Phoenicia, Egypt and Cyprus where priest kings rule over the sacred mysteries and where the goddess Astarte is worshipped at her sacred temple in Paphos" The setting is the 12th Century BC. The ancient world is in upheaval. From the north advancing Hittites and their ruthless pirate allies, the Sea Peoples again challenge the corrupt, crumbling Egypt of Ramses III. Strategic Cyprus island with its copper and swift war galleys can help Egypt meet this new threat to its very existence. But Zaradas, the mighty priest king of Paphos and consort of the goddess Astarte whose temple attracts thousands of pilgrims for the fertility rites celebrated each spring, has one great ambition. To make Cyprus the heart of a new world order. A military order dedicated to the service of the mother goddess, Astarte. However, hidden enemies watch and wait as the fateful last years of that crucial century are played out. As one Mediterranean world ends and another takes its place on the great wheel of time.
