Just in time for the 2008 election, WhiteWalls presents "Proximity to Power, American Style", Silvia Kolbowski's wry and searching response to recent questionable acts by the U.S. government, as well as current national shifts in legal, corporate, and cultural power. Interested in the vantage point of the man who occupies a support position in relation to the masculine powers privileged by American culture, Kolbowski in 2003 interviewed four men - left anonymous - who work for men who wield greater power.Kolbowski also interviewed forty boys between the ages of seven and eleven, asking only one question: 'What most represents power to you?' The spoken responses of the boys were then interpreted as visual images, such as the iconic face of Malcolm X, extreme weather, and sports heroes of every size and style - as well as some utterly unpredictable images. The book complements the interview transcripts and images of the children's responses with details of Goya's "The Sleep/Dream of Reason Produces Monsters".
