BREANDÁN Ó BUACHALLA is the leading authority on the literature of early-modern Ireland. His other books include An Caoine agus an Chaointeoireacht (1998), Aisling Ghéar (1996) and I mBéal Feirste Cois Cuain (1968, 1978). He is the O Donnell Chair in Irish Language and Literature at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana.
