Of all animals, they are the most conspicuous for their trim, stream-lined figures as well as their attractively coloured and patterned plumage. However, what about, for example, the corroboree frog or perhaps the lace monitor? They both sport attractively coloured and patterned coats. Most people, thinking no doubt about these kinds of animals, would probably hesitate to describe them in any stronger term than 'handsome'. I hope that the myriad superb photographs in this book, together with the information that accompanies them, will do much to alter this attitude. The true beauty of the creatures of the Australian wilderness can only be fully appreciated when they are seen in their environment and when their relationship to that environment is realised. The photographs, taken with considerable skill and art, wonderfully illustrate this. Here are mammals, birds and reptiles aplenty but there are also extensive treatments of the microworld of the lesser creatures - the lowly flat worm, primitive shellfish, spiders, insects and others. The conflict and competition of 'Nature red in tooth and claw' is perhaps more starkly seen in this world of leaf and twig, of forest litter and stream bank than it is in that of the more noticeable animals.Nevertheless, it is just as fascinatingly beautiful.J.R.
