"For Mrs Clegg, in grateful thanks for all you have done, and so successfully, for the minor Harmsworths; and with all good wishes in your retirement from the publisher, and his wife" - Tom Harmsworth 19th July 1985" . [Front (inside) Flap] Disaster struck when young Richard Passmore dropped the family's last sixpence he had been given to buy their usual weekend corned beef. It rolled along the bare boards of the grocery floor and slipped down a crack. It was the only money left for food that weekend. Poverty and hardship were to combine with friendship, humour and hope in those bleak days in the backstreets of Liverpool between the wars; when jobs were difficult to find and those available often soul-destroying. It was the onset of war that was to prove the remedy for the author's unenviable predicament. Richard Passmore, author of the immediately successful 'Blenheim Boy' and 'Moving Tent', describes his Liverpool childhood with a touch of magic ." ABOUT THE AUTHOR Richard Passmore was born in the Liverpool of 1920; his childhood was in no way different to that of many others of his time. At the age of eleven he won a scholarship to the Liverpool Collegiate School of those days, which he left, at the age of sixteen, with a matriculation certificate. He then started the first of several jobs; none as well, or even reasonably, paid; none offered any kind of reasonable prospects. Only eighteen months after leaving school he joined the Royal Air Force on a regular engagement as a wireless operator / air gunner. The war brought many dangers yet Passmore survived: shot down and taken prisoner during the Battle of Britain, he endured five years of captivity and a further two years of hospitals after his return to Britain. His surgeons refused to hold out any hope of a life expectation longer than ten years at most. For the next thirty-two years he worked happily as a schoolmaster and retired in 1980. Since then he has written and published two highly-acclaimed books of autobiography concerning RAF life and subsequent captivity. He is using his retirement to write and travel".
