Layton Ring's third book of collected poems takes its title from a parody of 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' concocted in 1947 abouit a visiting English conductor ('The Tyro') and the NZBC Symphony Orchestra ('The Raucoustra') of that era. . The other poems, whether skittish or thoughtful, humorous or doom-laden, follow in chronological order, revealing a persona vivax still able to laugh at 'cruel bloody fate', whatever the battering to come."
