Tom Roe was born in Staffordshire on Boxing Day 1909 into a mining family but at an early age his parents moved to Kirkby-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. At the end of his education, at Hucknall Secondary School, he entered railway service as a booking clerk with the London and North Eastern Railway Company. In May 1932 he married a Pilsley girl and they have two daughters. On August 4th 1941 he was called up to the Army. After training as a signaller for the Royal Artillery at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire, he was posted to the 78th (City of Edinburgh) Field Regiment, a 25-pounder unit, then stationed at Dunblane in Perthshire. On July 13th the regiment left Fyvie, in Aberdeenshire, for overseas service, arriving in Egypt in time for the battle of El Alamein, where the regiment supported the 1st Armoured Division. After the battle of El Alamein in the 8th Army advance meant that the 78th travelled through Libya, Cyrenaica, Tunisia and Sicily, before crossing the Straits of Messina, on the invasion of Italy, on July 15th 1943; landing at Reggio di Calabria where this story begins. On demobilisation in 1946 he returned to railway service until his retirement in 1974. N° de réf. du vendeur nrg180
