Eine Ecke bestossen, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Few prominent artists of the postwar period can have followed such a strange, stubborn and solitary path as Duane Hanson, the Minnesota farmer's son who produced almost all his work in a makeshift studio in a suburban Florida house, well away from the centres of the artificial art world of which he remained so suspicious, yet who carried on producing sculpture as new and challenging as the work of artists young enough to be his grandchildren. His work looks as extreme today, in its apparent purging of artistic effects, as when it first appeared three decades ago. Divesting his art of all signs of manual manipulation of his materials, and concealing the evidence of the subtle aesthetic intervention and interpretation that have contributed to the manufacture of the finished object, he concentrated instead on the naked fact of the subject, an astonishingly persuasive counterfeit of another human being as a fully realized physical presence.
