The Pack is Back - but so is Grey Pelt! 'More Magical Adventures of an English Setter Pack'. This novel follows on from the successful first book featuring the author's Setter family 'Memories of a Moon Map, the Extraordinary Adventures of an English Setter Pack'. All the pack members are here, but this time one of them moves centre stage: D'Arcy, who carries the distinctive mark of Grey Pelt, the Spirit of the Last Wolf of Lakeland. These are his deep and dark thoughts as, at the opening of the story, he studies his reflection in Merlins Mere, named for the falcons that inhabit the stand of rowan trees at the far end of the lake: 'I live in his shadow. At times I feel him within me, mostly as Lady Moon reaches her full power and glory and lights the heavens. I feel it even when clouds billow and veil her face. The pull is unmistakeable and the power tingles along my nerves causing my muscles to twitch. It is then that the urge to lope freely over field and mountain, to poise on a summit, tilt my head and open my throat to give voice is strongest - and hardest to resist'. Eventually he loses the battle and at the next full moon sets out alone on his perilous journey. He has no clear idea of where he is going or what he is expected to do, only that he must obey the inner promptings. Somehow he must discharge his obligation to Grey Pelt, and find his own true self. Having called on Grey Pelt in the past in order to rescue his fey sister Destiny, he must now repay the debt by embarking on The Quest. Alone, lost and injured, D'Arcy receives help from an unexpected source and a most unlikely relationship develops. Plagued by doubts and haunted by taboos and censure from both human and animal worlds, he is drawn ever deeper into the drama as it unfolds. This culminates in a breath-taking climax at full moon on the night of the Winter Solstice - with incredible and far-reaching results. Constantly in conflict and caught between love and duty, D'Arcy yearns to return to his home and pack, yet cannot bring himself to relinquish The Quest. To do so would be to admit failure and be covered in shame. Back home the Pack have their own trauma to face in his absence, and the knowledge of this weighs heavily on his conscience. At his darkest hour, D'Arcy is reminded of the perpetual nature of Life and of the need to have faith in himself, and in those who guide from beyond. Through his gripping adventures the thorny issue of the re-introduction of wolves into the wild places of Britain is explored, but for D'Arcy it is simply a deeply personal and emotional challenge. Pitched from a pampered existence into a wild and at times brutal wilderness, he must keep the faith and overcome many dangers in order to fulfil The Quest. Only then will the truth, along with his real nature, be revealed - along with an unexpected and magical reward.
