'A life of usefulness' is the story of this community from the late eighteenth century to its closure in 1960. It is also the story of the Quaker entrepreneur and humanist Abraham Beale, whose 'life of usefulness' as described in his obituary in the Cork press, included the early nineteenth-century development of the Monard community, its co-operative ethic and his involvement in Famine relief in the 1840s, which led to his death of typhus in 1847."
