Biographie de l'auteur

Thomas Coryate (1577?-1617) was born in Odcombe in Somerset. He played the part of unofficial court jester to Prince Henry. In 1608 he walked to Venice and back, this culminated in his book 'Coryats Crudities' published in 1612. Soon after this he set off to walk to India (with the intention of writing another travel book) it took him 5 years of footslog. Sadly, in 1617 he died in Surat from dysentery. He is thought to have been one of the world's first tourists. His account of Venice is the first detailed description of the city written by an Englishman. Jan Morris has praised this new selection of Coryate's writing saying 'It's a very nice edition, revealing Coryate as fascinating and full of fun.'

Revue de presse

Editor David Whittaker offers a rich selection of Coryate's text. All richly illustrated, and with an excellent introduction. This beautiful book is a bargain. --The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

Until now Coryate's trip to Venice has only been accessible in the two complete editions of the 'Crudities', the Jacobean original and Maclehose's reissue from 1905. David Whittaker's presentation of the footloose Odcombian's Venetian rhapsody, generously illustrated and with modern spelling, is essential reading for those following him to the peerless city. --Jonathan Keates, Times Literary Supplement
