About the book >.>.> This book comprises a collection of essays authored by Robert Innes Shearer, focusing on the birds and mammals of Caithness. The essays were originally published between 1859 and 1867, a time when documentation of the county's wildlife was remarkably sparse. Shearer, alongside his contemporary Henry Osborne, was recognised as an authority on the avian life of the region. However, their fame dwindled rapidly, and within a few decades, Shearer?s significant contributions fell into obscurity, remaining largely unacknowledged in the annals of natural history. The editors, Hugh Clark and Robin M. Sellers, express their delight in rediscovering Shearer?s articles in early 2003. They view these writings as not merely a treasure trove of previously forgotten material but also as a testament to the quality of Shearer?s observations and insights into the wildlife of Caithness. In undertaking the publication of this book, the editors aim not only to reintroduce Shearer's work to a broader audience but also to restore the recognition that his contributions deserve after more than a century and a half since his passing. They argue for the significance of Shearer as a Caithness naturalist, asserting that he had few peers during his time and remains a noteworthy figure in the study of the region's natural history. This compilation thus serves as both a historical record and a celebration of Shearer's legacy, bringing to light the depth of his expertise and the importance of his observations.
