Synopsis

May 2001 - the smooth re-election of Prime Minister Tony Blair seems assured, but a lethal incident in the Scottish Borders and the insolvency of conglomerate Carillient could derail the campaign.

For political reasons, Scottish accountant Tom Mackay is seconded to the government and tasked with assessing whether Carillient is worth saving. Mackay’s investigation takes him to Hong Kong and New York before he becomes involved in a Whitehall turf war between ministers and civil servants.

Through a memoir he’s inherited, Mackay discovers his investigation is linked with the activities of a family friend who aided the Duke of Windsor - formerly King Edward VIII - in wartime Nassau and Miami. After a suspicious death - which local police dismiss as an accident - Mackay and former lover Sally Purcell travel to the Caribbean to find out more. The trail leads to murder, personal peril, and scandalous revelations of treason.
