A few years ago, on one of my many quests for post-war ceramics in various charity shops, jumble sales and car-boot sales, I came across a couple of very distinctively shaped coffee pots. Taken by their strikingly bold designs, I turned them over to find out who made them: J & G Meakin Studio . I was intrigued, it was a name I hadn t heard of before. Wondering how many other patterns had been produced by the pottery, I decided to learn more, and so my work began. Consulting reference books at a local bookshop, I eventually unearthed an outline of the history, shapes and patterns of J & G Meakin, and gradually discovered how extensive the pottery s production had been, and also how many different shapes and patterns had been produced to date. Even today, new patterns and shapes keep popping up in the unlikeliest of places, so the full extent of what was produced is, and probably will remain, unknown. One of the pleasures of collecting pieces made by a particular pottery is developing knowledge and expertise in the subject. In this case, although certain areas of the archive material I studied were extensive and fairly complete, other areas required further research through magazines, leaflets, advertisements, library records and ex-employees of the factory. Many pattern names, dates and designers remain a mystery. If, however, while reading this book you are able to put a name to a pattern or add a design that does not appear in the book, please write to me care of the publisher s address. As well as being of personal interest, this information can then be used to update any future editions.

This is a comprehensive book, identifying nearly all of the Meakin Patterns, very thoroughly researched and printed to a very high standard, a must buy for any pottery collector; not just the Meakin lovers among you!
