A group of people successfully sharing a house in London, move together to a dilapidated mansion in remote Middle England, to try out their ideals about life, i.e. sharing, anti-materialism and self-sufficiency. There are hilarious and farcical moments, but then the group runs out of money and the story takes an unexpected twist.

After a pre-war childhood in Federated Malay States, Beti spent the war years living in South Wales next to the perimeter fence of an explosives factory. Subsequent to her marriage Beti tasted colonial life again, travelling with her husband to Nigeria just before that country attained independence from the British Empire. She has written three books about a house which has been the location of different types of communal living in England during the last two centuries: “Hear the Penny Fall”, “Nettle Roots” and "Confluence". She has also written non-fiction, including “The Blackout Kids”. She lives in Stone, Staffordshire.
