In August 1935, Ronald and Gwyneth Still, aged 27 and 29 years old, set out on the long sea voyage from Tilbury to China, where Ronald was engaged to work as a doctor in a small mission hospital in the north. Ten years later, they returned by the same route, now with three small daughters, and passengers in a hospital ship, their luggage a motley collection of enamel tableware, camp beds and second hand clothes. The story of those ten turbulent years, encompassing eight years under Japanese occupation and three years in internment in Shanghai, is told in these letters to their families in England. This is an intimate and compelling story of ordinary people living in extraordinary times. It throws light on a hitherto little known aspect of Word War 2 and brings alive the work of mid-twentieth century Christian missionaries in a way that is both accessible and inspiring.
Audrey Salters was born in Japanese occupied China and spent three years as a child in internment in Shanghai. She graduated in English language & literature from the University of Oxford, and undertook post-graduate study at the London School of Economics and the University of Edinburgh. After a career in social work and social work eductation, she has retired and lives with her husband in St Andrews.
