Revue de presse

The gripping and beautifully paced debut of an intriguing new talent. --William Dalrymple

It is a small masterpiece; the best novel that I have read about war since that other flawed island story Captain Corelli's Mandolin. It can well stand the comparison. --Nigel Jones, Sunday Telegraph

On an idyllic Pacific island in WWII the two protagonists, English Spitfire pilot Strickland and the Japanese officer Hayama, slowly bridge the immense cultural gulf which divides them and discover the meaning of true friendship... an impressive first novel which grippingly depicts the suffering and pain of conflict and the humanity that lies within us all. This well-researched and thought-provoking novel skillfully explores the psychology of conflict and the contradictions and absurdities in the wartime concept of 'the enemy'. --Sean Curtin, Editor - Japan Book Review

Présentation de l'éditeur

It is the final weeks of the World War Two and the Japanese forces are in retreat. Young Spitfire pilot, Edward Strickland is based in the South Pacific. His task is to search and destroy any remnants of the once mighty Imperial Army. During a dawn patrol he is forced to ditch his aircraft near a remote island. Close to death he is hauled up onto the deck of a Japanese ship by the commander of a small Japanese company who have remained hidden on the island throughout the war. Although, the Japanese commander treats the young pilot with appalling brutality Strickland refuses to be broken. The battle of wills that follows brings the men together as brothers in arms. But there is little space for mutual understanding and friendship in war. A storm is gathering and Japan's sudden surrender severs the two men's relationship for ever.
