Synopsis

My books on the Merchant Navy are about the men I sailed with and the things they did. Since I was a mere twenty-years old when I joined in 1950 and am now a crumbling 83-year old, most of those gentlemen I had the pleasure to sail with, will be up there with the Good Lord and keeping Him right.There was no shortage of merchant seamen during World War Two and the horrors of the Atlantic and Murmansk convoys was just something they accepted as part of the job. In my books, ‘Shark’, ‘Heroes and Half-Wits’, ‘What a Life’, ‘Diverse Verses’, and now 'Retired’, I have praised these men, which is my whole reason for writing about them.

Bob Jackman joined the Merchant Navy in 1950 rising to second engineer in 1956, a rank he maintained until retiring from the navy in 1990. He then served in coasters and responded to calls for his trouble-shooting expertise.
