Synopsis

Almost since their formation at the end of the nineteenth century, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have battled to become London's top football club. Their rivalry was intensified in 1913 by Arsenal's move from Plumstead to Highbury, only three miles from Tottenham's White Hart Lane ground, and moreso in 1919 when Spurs were "robbed" of their First Division status by the clever lobbying and skillful manipulation of the Arsenal chairman, Sir Henry Norris. The Battle of London takes an unbiased look at these events and tells the story of the rivalry between these two great clubs from the 1880s to the 1970s. In doing so author Rex Pardoe compares the achievements of Tottenham and Arsenal in their respective League and Cup doubles of 1960-61 and 1970-71 and looks at their successes in the European Cup Winners Cup and European Fairs Cup. The final chapter containing comparative tables of the clubs' achievements in the League and Cup has been fully updated.
