The book was written to educate young school children on the dangers of fire and playing with matches. The main character telling the stories is a fire engine named Phil, who can talk. He is called Phil because his number plate is P HIL. All children can associate with fire engines. No matter where young children live in the world today, there is a fire engine and the crew, waiting to answer a call for help to put out fires and save lives. If children and their families are in danger, the fire engine and the crew will come to their aid.

A former fire fighter who has turned his hand to writing children s books is unveiling a mural of his popular character at the burns unit of the Royal Manchester Children s Hospital today. Dave Fanning, a former station commander from Liverpool, created the character of Phil the Fire Engine in a bid to help educate children about the dangers of fires and how they start. His series of children s books has already proved popular with staff at the hospital, particularly in the burns unit where the team are now using the stories to help children who have suffered burns to understand and come to terms with their injuries. Although Phil s creator Dave Fanning originally designed the books as an educational resource for use in schools, the stories have proved such a popular resource for staff and patients in the unit, that an 8 ft x 4ft mural has now been fitted in the hospital depicting Phil the Fire Engine which reads: Phil says don t play with matches and fire .
