Synopsis

W.&.T Avery located at the famous Soho Foundry near Birmingham was the largest weighing machine manufacturers in the world. The firm was tasked with improving the standards of weighing and testing in the war industry. The firm also produced munitions at Soho Foundry as well as producing aircraft components and aircraft at their Bristol branch - Parnall and Sons. They funded the Harborne Hall VAD Hospital in Birmingham; had their own company of soldiers - D Coy 1st Bat. Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The book covers the whole of Averys' activities in the war as well as the social changes at Soho. Illustrated with 129 photographs of production facilities, Harborne Hall, soldiers and equipment. A unique look at a vital war industry with rare photographs, with a fascinating look at the effect of the war on employees, especially the 1,200 who enlisted. Appendices includes lists of Harborne Hall Staff, D company Roster, as well as details of the Averymen who served.

Andrew Lound is a writer, lecturer and broadcaster. He is the former Curator of the Avery Historical Museum which was located at the famous Soho Foundry in Smethwick near Birmingham. He acts as the UK National Co-ordinator for The Planetary Society, founder member of the Society for the History of Astronomy, Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society, and has held numerous positions with various astronomical societies. Since the late 1980s he has been a regular contributor on BBC Radio commenting on space science, and local history. He writes and presents history programmes for Made in Birmingham Television including the highly acclaimed series Streets of Birmingham . He is a regular space science commentator on Talk Radio. He has also appeared in several television and film documentaries where he has played roles as diverse as the 17th century astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks, 2nd officer Lightoller of the Titanic, and Neil Armstrong; and has had supporting artiste roles in a number of television dramas including Dancing on the Edge and Time Crashers . Andrew was advisor on (and made a cameo performance in) Titanic Love, an international award-winning film which utilized as part of its theme Andrew s book Life in the Balance the story of William E. Hipkins, the Managing Director of W. & T. Avery Limited who died on the Titanic. He has been active in promoting space science to the general public for over 40 years staging more than 5,000 exhibitions, lectures and presentations around the UK and abroad. He has developed the Odyssey Dramatic Presentation; this combines music, drama, and images with his detailed knowledge of space science both historical as well as contemporary. In 2006 working with the British Council, he led a scientific and public awareness team to Libya to study a solar eclipse. He is also an expert on the famous liner Titanic and presents lectures and stages exhibitions on this subject also. The Power of Balance is his fourth book.
