Following on from the first volume in the series, 'The Fishermen of Port Isaac', this book deals with the other sea-going activities of the men of Port Isaac, Port Gaverne and Port Quin. It deals with the nineteenth century sailing vessel trade and the loss of life with that trade and with the local herring fishing fleet. The old Port Isaac Lifeboat is dealt with in detail, as are wrecks on this section of the coast. The Port Quin Disaster as seen through the ancestors of the author is dealt with. The effects on the family of loss of life to the sea is examined. Also, Smuggling, Cornish Gigs, yachting and a section on Port Isaac characters completes this book which has been very well received by the local community. Some wonderful poems by two ancestors of the author adds to the enjoyment of this book.

The author's great-great-grandfather was a master mariner with his own sailing vessel, and other sides of his family were mariners for many centuries. His grandfather was a Port Isaac fisherman and many of his family were so employed. He grew up in the close community of Port Isaac during the 1950s and 1960s where he had much experience on wooden boats and talking to old men who had fished and sailed the old vessels. Although he could not follow a career on the sea, he feels that so much history has been lost in the Port Isaac area, that he is an ideal position to record as much of this fascinating history as possible. This is the second book in the series and he hopes you enjoy it as much as the people who have read it so far.
