When seven-year-old Minah Russell visits London's Natural History Museum she finds herself in the middle of more than just old bones. She witnesses a daring attempted theft which is suddenly and spectacularly thwarted by a duo of masked, super canine crime-fighters. Along with the rest of the world, Minah is desperate to know the true identities of the valiant twosome who saved the priceless artefacts. When she returns to her school in the quiet village of Amblesham, Minah quickly befriends two new pupils, Wolfgang and Helmut. Even though Minah is a bright, friendly and popular girl, she still has to deal with some dastardly bullies in the playground in the form of the horrible Perry Thatcher and his equally nasty gang. Soon after her trip to London, Minah suffers a mean-spirited attack from Perry. But just as she begins to get really frightened, Wolfgang and Helmut leap to her rescue, giving Thatcher a taste of his own medicine. Their bravery gets clever Minah thinking: could there be a connection between Wolfgang and Helmut and the courageous heroes from the museum? Perfect for all primary school age children, especially those aged 7 to 10, Power Pups is an inspired and energetic debut novel from David de la Harpe. With a passion for story-telling and encouraging children to develop their reading skills, he delivers an entertaining read that evokes fond memories of our favourite children's fiction. Power Pups also showcases the unique illustrations of Spanish-born Reading University Fine Art student Esther Arzola, who captures the exuberant essence of the story, bringing these audacious dogs to life. The delightful canine and human characters are set to win over legions of fans, young and old, with their escapades. Children engage with the colourful vim and vigour of the book, and parents and teachers are embracing the timeless messages of friendship, fair-play and standing up for what you believe in. This fabulous first novel is just the beginning of some serious mutt mayhem!
I especially like the way you have used well known sayings and adapted them. I can't wait until my friends buy the book and we can talk about it and play Power Pups in the playground! --Ollie - Age 8, Wokingham
Your book is amazing. It had comedy, adventure, bad guys, and good guys. All the good books that I have read are fast paced and they make you want to read more. Power Pups was one of the best stories I have ever read, incredibly fast paced and as soon as I had finished the first book I was desperate to start the second one. At school we do a star rating for the books we read and I would give Power Pups 5 stars! I loved it. --Tom - Age 9, London
Thank you for the Power Pups book. I have read it and think it is great. --Abby - Age 8, Reading
