Présentation de l'éditeur

This book is the first in the Botolph Trilogy. When his father's dynasty is defeated in northern England, Botolph's parents flee southwards where he is subsequently born. Some years later a passing monk introduces the family to the new culture of Christianity which is sweeping the country and Botolph and his brother become students in a monastery. Here Botolph meets the irreverent and turbulent Luka and, after a bad start, a lifelong friendship develops. The pair suffer the joys and tribulations of a Boys Own lifestyle as they escape the clutches of a Mercian tyrant by escaping in an open boat. After narrowly resisting the temptations of romance with a young royal abbess, Botolph sails with Luka to France where they travel south in company with the entourage of a French king. A series of adventures frustrate their efforts to become tonsured at the abbey of Faremoutiers.
