Synopsis

The Contemporary Iraqi Poetry Movement, The Future of the Past sheds light on the historical background of contemporary Iraqi poetry and the transformation through which it went. This book offers an extensive look at the work of some of the most well-known and pioneering Iraqi poets including Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab and Nazik Al-Malaika, who launched the Arab Free Verse Movement otherwise known as Tafila poetry. This book offers a unique insight into the poetry of popular Iraqi poets such as Saadi Yousef and Sargon Boulus. The poetry colourfully reflects the experiences of Iraqi people, dictatorship, social hardships, exile and the horrors of terrorism that the country still endures.
