Even before William I built Windsor Castle in 1070, the royal palace of Edward the Confessor had been situated in Old Windsor. The relationship between crown and county was maintained when William's castle was transformed from a defensive fort into a royal residence by the 12th century. This association was strengthened over the centuries as the place where various monarchs were born (Edward I), married (Henry I) or buried (Edward IV, Henry VIII, Charles I, and those from George IV onwards), as well as the long periods spent there by both Queen Anne and Queen Victoria. It was no surprise, therefore, that when the royal family felt that it was inappropriate to still bear the name 'Hanover' during the First World War, it chose Windsor' as its new surname, adopting it formally on 17th July 1917.
