Synopsis

Once gold had been discovered in California, miners, with picks and shovels, their meager belongings mostly carried by one or two burros, criss-crossed the mountains. pecking away at each piece of rock which looked promising. The Picacho area was mined mostly by Mexicans who had come from the Sonoran area, but Algos, Indians and Chinese soon followed. When granite and quartz mining began, the original miners were busily exploring the washes running from the mountains to the river. Just when the first placer mining in the area began does not seem to be quite clear. Lt. Ives had seen evidence of placer mining when his little steamer, the Explorer, chugged up the river in 1858.
